Photographers all around the world are taking to the streets to capture the world around them. From architecture, to interesting people and to fashion, these photographers shoot the fleeting moments that most of us miss with a blink. One such photographer is Ari Seth Cohen. Cohen’s focus is not quite the mainstream fashion photography we see on our Instagram feeds. While we are usually fed with images of beautiful, quirky, young people dressed in the best there is, he seeks out those who are more advanced in life.
Cohen spent many of his childhood days with his grandmothers, these were the ladies who inspired him to choose his subject matter (“Ari Seth Cohen | #Bof500 | The Business Of Fashion” 2016), the people who have more life experience. Ari Seth Cohen’s blog, Advanced Style “offers proof from the wise and silver-haired set that personal style advances with age.” (Cohen 2016) He scopes the streets of New York to find his models and photographs them in all their glory. The images that emerge are joyful celebrations of life.
Our fixation with the idea of youth has reached new heights with every new cream holding the ingredient for eternal youth and wrinkles disappearing with the click of a mouse. However, Ari Seth Cohen noticed a shift in the media. Aging was no longer depicted as a negative part of our lives that we had to dread. It had become “positive and energetic.”(TEDx 2016) Brands including MAC and Kate Spade had hired older models, including the eccentric, Iris Apfel. Soon, he was photographing his Advanced Style ladies for magazines and designers such as Karen Walker.
The first collaboration between Ari Seth Cohen and Karen Walker was for the Forever Campaign of Spring 2013. The four Advanced Style ladies that Cohen chose had freedom over the styling- picking the glasses, the clothing, even having their own homes as the shoot location, allowing even more freedom.
The second collaboration, Magic Hands, was completed just recently and takes a different perspective. The models were still given the freedom of choice, but rather than the attention being on the face, the image, as the title suggests, focuses on hands. “Hands can be every bit as expressive as faces,” Karen said. “These Magic Hands speak of a life well-lived and they absolutely have their own stories to tell.”(Walker 2016)
Ari Seth Cohen’s Advanced Style captures the people who prove that, just like a good wine, “we truly get better with age.” (TEDx 2016)
